A supernova is when a star explodes, and there are two main types: Type 1 and Type 2.
Imagine you're playing with building blocks. A Type 2 supernova happens when the star is like a big kid who eats too much candy, it gets so full, it can't hold itself together anymore and pops in a huge explosion.
Now, a Type 1 supernova is more like two kids sharing a snack. One kid (a white dwarf) takes too much from the other (another star), becomes too heavy, and poof, it explodes too!
What's the difference?
- Type 2 happens when a big star runs out of fuel and collapses in on itself.
- Type 1 happens when a small, dense star steals material from another and then explodes.
Both are supernovas, but they happen for different reasons, like two different kinds of explosions at a party!
Examples
- A star explodes like a giant firework, and depending on its type, like a white dwarf or a massive star, it creates different kinds of explosions.
- Type II supernovas happen when big stars run out of fuel and collapse in on themselves.
