Strange cloud shapes are like when you blow bubbles and they float up into the sky, but instead of just one bubble, there are lots of them, all moving and changing.
Why Clouds Look Funny
Clouds are made of tiny water droplets or ice crystals, which are so small you can’t see them individually. When the wind pushes these droplets around in the air, they form different shapes, just like when you swirl paint on a canvas with your finger.
How the Wind Changes Cloud Shapes
Sometimes the wind is gentle and smooth, making clouds look soft and fluffy. Other times, the wind is fast or changes direction suddenly, which makes clouds twist and stretch into funny shapes, like when you blow on a bunch of confetti in the air, and it all flutters around in different directions.
If you’ve ever watched smoke from a chimney, you can see how it moves and swirls, that’s kind of what happens to clouds, but much higher up and with more droplets!
