A star system is like a family of stars living together, and a galaxy is like a huge neighborhood where many star systems live.
Imagine you're playing with your toy blocks. A star is like one block, shiny and bright. When you stack a few blocks together, that's like a star system. The most famous one is our own solar system, which has the Sun (the biggest block) and planets (smaller blocks) orbiting around it.
Now think of all your toy blocks scattered across a big playroom, that’s like a galaxy! There are different kinds of galaxies, just like there are different kinds of playrooms. Some are spiral, shaped like a pinwheel; some are elliptical, like squashed ovals; and others are irregular, looking all wiggly and wild.
Galaxies can be big or small, sometimes they're like tiny toy rooms with just a few blocks, and other times they’re huge playrooms full of millions of stars living together in fun patterns.
Examples
- Galaxies can be spiral, elliptical, or irregular, think of them as different shapes in the universe’s big dance.
- Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has billions of stars and is just one of many in the universe.
