Semiconductors Explained

A semiconductor is a special material that acts like a smart traffic cop for electricity. Unlike metal, which always lets electric current flow easily, and unlike rubber, which stops it completely, a semiconductor can be controlled. It sits right in the middle, ready to switch from blocking to flowing on command.

How It Works

Think of electricity as cars moving down a highway. In a normal wire, the road is wide open and cars zoom through without stopping. In an insulator (like plastic), the road is blocked by a giant wall. A semiconductor is a road with a gate that you can open or close.

When we add tiny amounts of other elements to the semiconductor, we create extra space for electrons to move. This is called doping. Imagine sprinkling extra stepping stones across a stream. Suddenly, the water (electricity) can flow much faster because there are more paths to cross.
