The Anatomy of Scientific Reasoning

Science is how we figure out how the world works by guessing, testing, and checking our work. Think of it like being a detective who never stops looking for clues.

The Guess and the Test

Imagine you have a toy car that won’t roll. Your first job is to make a smart guess, called a hypothesis. You might guess, "The wheels are stuck." This is just an educated guess based on what you see. You don’t just hope it is true; you need proof.

Checking the Evidence

Now, you test your guess. You pick up the car and spin the wheels. If they spin freely, your guess was wrong. Maybe the battery is dead. So you make a new guess: "The battery is empty." You put in a fresh battery. If the car moves, your new guess was right! If it still doesn’t move, you look for another clue.

Science is not about being right every time. It is about being careful. You look at the evidence (what you see or measure) to support or reject your idea. This keeps us from believing things just because they sound cool. We repeat the test to be sure. If three friends test the same broken car and see the same thing, we can trust the result.
