How Does Rocks Born from Fire Work?

Rocks born from fire are like cookies that come out of an oven, hot and full of energy.

Volcanoes are like giant ovens in the Earth. When they get really hot, they melt rocks, turning them into a thick, glowing liquid called lava. This is just like how chocolate melts when you put it near the heat.

When lava cools down, it becomes solid again, just like how melted chocolate hardens back to a cookie once it’s cool. Depending on where it cools and how fast it cools, it can become different kinds of rocks:

• If it cools slowly underground, it becomes granite, like thick, chunky chocolate that's had time to set.
• If it cools quickly on the surface, it becomes basalt, more like thin, smooth chocolate that sets fast.

Sometimes, volcanoes even throw out bits of hot rock into the air. These fall down and cool quickly too, just like sprinkles falling from a cookie and setting in place as they land!
