Air is not empty space; it is heavy stuff that pushes on everything around it, just like a stack of invisible blankets.
The Squeeze Effect
Imagine you are inside a giant, invisible balloon filled with air. That air has weight. The air at the bottom is squished tight because all the air above it is pressing down. This squishing is called pressure.
Think of a pile of pillows. The bottom pillow is the most squished!
When one place has more air pushing down than another place, we have a pressure difference. Nature hates being unbalanced. It always wants things to be even. So, air rushes from the squished spot (high pressure) to the loose spot (low pressure) to fix the imbalance.
Everyday Examples
- The Straw: When you suck on a straw, you remove air from inside it. The air outside is still pushing hard. The outside pressure is stronger, so it shoves your drink up the straw.
- The Balloon: Blow up a balloon. The air inside is packed tight. If you poke a tiny hole, the air zooms out. Why? Because the inside pressure is higher than the outside air.
- The Door Push: Try to close a door while a strong wind blows. The wind adds extra pressure on one side. It acts like a giant invisible hand pushing the door shut.
