Photosynthesis is how plants make their own food using sunlight, water, and air.
Imagine you're at a pizza restaurant, but instead of ordering from the menu, you make your own pizza right there in the kitchen, that’s kind of what photosynthesis is like for plants.
The Sun Is Like a Pizza Oven
Plants use sunlight, which is like a big, warm pizza oven. They take in carbon dioxide through tiny holes in their leaves, just like you might breathe in air when you're cooking. This carbon dioxide is like the cheese and toppings on your pizza, it's what helps make the food.
Water and Air Make the Pizza Taste Great
Plants also need water, which they drink from the soil through their roots. Think of water as the sauce that makes the pizza extra tasty. The air around them has carbon dioxide, which we already mentioned, but it also has oxygen, the stuff you breathe out when you’re done eating.
At the end of this whole process, plants make sugar (their food) and release oxygen into the air. That oxygen is what animals like us breathe in to keep going!
