How Does Persuasion Psychology: "Reactance" and Overcoming Resistance Work?

Persuasion psychology is like trying to get your friend to trade their favorite toy for a new one, and sometimes they say no because they don't want to lose what they have.

Reactance is when someone says "No!" just because you're pushing them too hard. It’s like when your mom keeps telling you to clean your room, and all of a sudden you really don’t want to clean it anymore, you just want to be left alone!

What Reactance Feels Like

Imagine you're playing with your favorite dinosaur toy, and someone comes up and says, "You should trade this for a robot!" That might not sound too bad. But if they keep saying it over and over again, "Trade it! Trade it! Trade it!", all of a sudden, the dinosaur feels super important, and you just want to say, "No! I don’t want to trade!"

How You Can Overcome Resistance

Sometimes, instead of pushing too hard, you can make the other person feel like they’re making a smart choice. Like if your friend says, "I don’t want to trade," you could say, "Oh, that’s okay, maybe later!" That way, they still feel in control.

If you're gentle and let them choose their own time, they might even be happy to trade when the moment is right!
