Noam Chomsky thinks we all have a "language instinct" that helps us learn languages quickly and easily, like how kids learn to talk by playing with their friends.
Imagine you have a special toy box in your brain, it's called the "Language Acquisition Device". This toy box has all sorts of tools and blocks that help you figure out how words work, even if you’ve never heard them before. When you hear someone say "The cat sat on the mat," your brain is like a detective putting together pieces of a puzzle, it knows what "sat" means because it already understands "the cat" and "on the mat."
Like Learning to Ride a Bike
Learning a language is a bit like learning to ride a bike. At first, you wobble and fall, but after a while, you just keep going without thinking about it. Your brain is always working in the background, helping you make sense of new sounds and words, even if they’re from another part of the world!
So every time you learn something new, your "Language Acquisition Device" gets stronger, like a muscle that keeps getting bigger and better with use.
Examples
- A child learns to speak without being taught explicitly.
- Language feels natural because we're born with it.
