MinuteEarth explains how birds work by showing how they use their bodies to fly like little airplanes.
How Birds Fly Like Airplanes
Birds have special feathers that act like wings on an airplane. When a bird flaps its wings, it pushes air down, and the air pushes the bird up, just like when you jump on a trampoline!
Feathers are soft and light, but they’re also strong. They help birds stay warm at night and make them fast when they're flying.
How Birds Move Like Us
Birds have bones that are light, almost like hollow straws. This helps them fly without getting too heavy. Their legs work like ours, some birds run on the ground before they take off, just like you might run before you jump into a pool!
When birds eat, they use their beaks to grab food, and they swallow it whole or break it apart with special tools inside their mouths. Some birds even use their feet to catch fish in the water, like how you might use your hands to catch a ball!
