Phosphine is a terrible gas you can make by mixing some everyday stuff like sugar and something you might find in the kitchen.
Imagine you have a bag of sugar, that's just tiny crystals made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Now imagine you put that sugar into a pot with a special kind of salt called phosphorus, which is like a supercharged version of regular salt. You also add some water, and then you heat it up, like when you make hot chocolate.
Making the Gas
When you mix these things together and heat them, the sugar starts to break apart, and the phosphorus helps turn those pieces into a gas called phosphine. It's like giving the sugar a little push so it can escape as smoke, but instead of sweet-smelling smoke, it’s a terrible gas that stinks really badly and can even make people cough or get sick.
It's kind of like when you leave your shoes in the sun and they start to smell, only this time, the smell is coming from something you made with sugar and salt!
