How Muscles Work Like Stretchy Strings
Big Muscles Do Big Jobs
Your legs have big muscles that help you run and jump. Your arms have strong muscles that let you lift things like your favorite stuffed animal or a backpack full of books. These muscles work together, some pull while others push, just like how two kids can move a big couch by pulling from opposite sides.
When you're done moving, your muscles relax and go back to their normal size, like a rubber band that lets go after you stretch it. That’s why you feel tired sometimes, all those strong ropes were working really hard! The big muscles in your body are like strong ropes that help you move, just like when you pull a toy car across the floor.
Examples
- When you lift a book, your biceps contract to help your arm move.
- Your legs use large muscles like the quadriceps to run or jump.
- The heart is a muscle that keeps pumping blood around your body.
