How Does Igneous Dikes - an introduction, how they form Work?

Igneous dikes are like cracks filled with hot liquid rock that hardens into a new wall inside the Earth.

Imagine you're playing with playdough and you make a long snake, then you push it into a gap between two blocks. That’s kind of what happens with dikes, but way underground!

How They Form

Deep under the ground, there are big rock layers that can be hot and squishy, like warm butter. When this hot rock moves, it finds cracks or openings, just like you find a gap between your blocks.

Then, the hot liquid rock, called magma, flows into these cracks and cools down. It hardens over time, forming a new rock wall inside the old rocks. This new wall is the dike!

It’s like when you pour melted chocolate into a cookie and it sets, now you have a cool new layer added to your treat!
