Imagine you have a super small box, so small it's like one grain of sand in the whole universe. Inside that box is just one atom, which is like the tiniest building block of everything around us. Now, think about how you write on paper with a pencil, you leave little marks. In this case, we're leaving tiny marks on an atom by changing its energy level.

Like a Tiny Light Switch

You can think of it like a tiny light switch that’s inside the atom. When the switch is on, it means the atom has more energy, let's say it's like a little lightbulb glowing bright. When the switch is off, it’s like the bulb isn’t glowing at all.

By turning this tiny switch on or off, we can make the atom remember one bit of data, that’s like saying "yes" or "no," or "0" or "1" in computer language.

If we use many atoms together, each one remembering a bit, we could store lots and lots of information, just like how you stack blocks to build something big.
