How Does Halley's Comet and the End of the World Work?

Halley’s Comet is like a space snowball that visits Earth every few hundred years, and it's not going to end the world, but it sure makes for a cool show!

Imagine you're on a swing. You go up high, then come back down, that's kind of how Halley’s Comet moves. It swings through space, coming closer to Earth every 75 or 76 years. When it gets near us, we can see it as a bright streak in the sky, like when you flicker a light on a dark night.

Sometimes people think Halley’s Comet means the end of the world, kind of like how your toy might break when it falls off the couch. But actually, Halley’s Comet is just passing by. It's not going to crash into Earth and make everything explode (unless we're really bad at math or timing).

So even though it's a big deal every few hundred years, the world isn't ending, just having a fun visit from an old friend in space!
