Geoengineering is like giving Earth a special kind of sunscreen to help it stay comfortable.
Imagine you're playing outside on a super hot day, and your skin starts to burn. You grab some sunscreen so you can keep playing without getting too hot. That’s what geoengineering does, it helps Earth stay cool when the sun gets too strong.
Two Ways to Use Sunscreen
- Putting sunscreen on top of Earth's blanket:
One way is like putting a thin layer of sunscreen in the sky, high up where clouds live. This layer helps block some of the sunlight before it reaches Earth. It’s like wearing a hat when you’re outside, it keeps some of the sun’s heat from hitting your face.
- Making Earth's blanket better at keeping heat out:
Another way is helping Earth’s blanket, which is made of tiny particles in the air, work better. This blanket helps keep more heat from staying trapped on Earth, just like a good coat keeps you warm even when it’s chilly outside.
Geoengineering isn’t perfect, but it gives Earth a little extra help to stay comfortable.
