Forests are like big, green lungs that help people and animals breathe easier.
Imagine you're playing outside on a hot day, you feel tired because the air is thick and warm. Now imagine there's a giant treehouse nearby, full of trees that take in the hot, stuffy air and turn it into cool, fresh air. That’s what forests do! They help clean the air we breathe by taking in carbon dioxide, which is like the “hot, stuffy” part of the air, and giving out oxygen, which is like the “cool, fresh” part.
How Trees Breathe
Trees have special little helpers called leaves. When the sun shines on them, they work hard to take in carbon dioxide from the air and make oxygen, just like how you breathe in and out. This process is called photosynthesis, but you don’t need to remember that name, it’s just like a tree doing its version of breathing!
Every time we breathe out, we send more carbon dioxide into the air, and every time trees breathe in, they make more oxygen for us. It's like having a big group of friends who help you breathe better, that’s why forests are like the lungs of the Earth!
