How Does Every Single Type of Volcanic Eruption Work?

Volcanic eruptions are like when a soda bottle explodes, fizzy and full of surprises.

Imagine Earth is like a big, hot soup pot deep underground. Inside it, there’s magma, hot rock that’s like melted lava. When the pressure inside gets too high, it wants to escape!

How Eruptions Happen

There are different kinds of volcanic eruptions because of how the magma moves and what's on top of the volcano.

  • Some volcanoes are like a soda bottle with a cap, when the pressure builds up enough, pop! The magma comes rushing out in a big burst. These are called explosive eruptions, like the one from Mount Vesuvius.
  • Other volcanoes are more like a slow leak, the magma trickles out calmly. These are called effusive eruptions, like what happens at Kilauea in Hawaii.

Sometimes, the volcano even sends rocks and ash high into the sky, like when you shake up a bottle of soda and it sprays everywhere!

Each type of eruption is just Earth’s way of saying, “I need to let out some pressure!”Volcanic eruptions are like when a soda bottle explodes, fizzy and full of surprises.
