Blood types are like different kinds of puzzle pieces that help your body know who to let in and who to keep out.
Imagine you have a special door in your body, it’s called the blood cell door. When someone gives you blood, like when you're sick or hurt, your body checks if the puzzle piece from the other person fits with yours.
There are four main kinds of puzzle pieces: A, B, AB, and O. These are your blood types. Each type has a special rule for who can come through the door.
How Blood Types Work
- If you have type A, your body lets in people with A or O blood.
- If you have type B, your body lets in people with B or O blood.
- If you have type AB, your body is very friendly, it lets in A, B, or O blood!
- If you have type O, your body is picky, it only lets in O blood.
It’s like having a door that opens for certain guests. Your body knows who to welcome and who to say “no thank you” to, all because of the puzzle pieces in your blood!
Examples
- Someone with type AB can receive blood from any group.
- Type O is the universal donor for red blood cells.
