Alcohol acts like a sleepy friend who helps your brain slow down and relax.
Your brain is like a busy traffic jam, full of cars (nerve signals) zooming around all the time. When you drink alcohol, it’s like someone throws a soft blanket over the whole road, making everything move slower and calmer.
How Alcohol Makes You Feel
Alcohol is like a special kind of sleepy juice that goes into your brain. It finds some important messengers (called neurotransmitters) and tells them to slow down. One of these messengers, called GABA, gets extra sleepy, making you feel relaxed or even drowsy.
Another messenger, called glutamate, usually helps keep things going, but alcohol makes it quieter, like turning down the volume on a loud radio.
What Happens When You Drink More
If you drink more alcohol, your brain feels even sleepier. It’s like when you’re really tired after a long day, everything starts to feel slower, and you might even fall asleep.
Your body knows it's been drinking, so it tries to wake up the messengers again once the alcohol leaves, that’s why sometimes people feel sore or tired the next morning.
Examples
- A person drinks beer and feels more relaxed.
- Alcohol slows down the brain's messages.
- It makes it harder to think clearly.
