Edema is when your body gets swollen because too much water gets stuck in your tissues.
Imagine you have a balloon that's filled with air, it’s nice and round. Now, if you pour in extra water, the balloon stretches out and becomes bigger. That’s like what happens to your skin and muscles during edema, they stretch because of all the extra water inside them.
Why does this happen?
Your body has tiny tubes called blood vessels, which are like little highways for blood. Sometimes these highways get blocked or leaky, letting water escape into the nearby tissue, kind of like when a hose gets pinched and water squirts out on the ground.
Also, if your feet have been in socks all day, it’s like putting your shoes in a pool, water just stays there, making everything feel squishy and heavy.
What does this feel like?
It's like wearing wet socks for hours, your toes feel full and tight. Your legs might look bigger, or your face might seem rounder, like you've been eating too many cookies!
But don’t worry, edema is just a little extra water party in your body, and it usually goes away when the cause stops.
Examples
- A sprained ankle causes edema, making the foot look swollen and feel tender.
- When you sit for too long on a plane, your legs might swell because of fluid buildup.
- Edema can be like a balloon filling with water, it stretches the skin.
