Like a Train Passing By
Think about a train blowing its whistle as it comes toward you. The sound waves get squished together, like crushed soda cans, making the pitch higher. Once the train passes you and starts moving away, the sound waves stretch out, just like when you pull apart a rubber band, making the pitch lower.
Why It Matters
This happens with sound, but it also works with light! When stars move toward us, their light shifts to blue (higher energy), and when they move away, it shifts to red (lower energy). Scientists use this trick to figure out how fast stars are moving, like using a cosmic speedometer!
