How Does Distances: Crash Course Astronomy #25 Work?

Imagine you're playing hide and seek, but instead of just hiding around the corner, you’re hiding super far away, like on another planet, that's how distances work in space!

When we talk about how far things are from each other in space, it’s kind of like measuring how many steps it takes to walk from your house to school. But instead of steps, we use light-years, which is the distance light travels in one year. That's super fast! Light can go around the Earth 7 times every second.

Why We Need Big Numbers

Space is huge, so we need big numbers to describe it. If you think of your bedroom as a small part of your house, then the whole solar system is like a giant building with many floors, and planets are just rooms on different floors.

A Fun Example: The Solar System

Imagine Earth is a marble in your hand. Then the Sun would be about 10 meters away from you, that's almost as long as a school bus! And if we go out to the edge of our solar system, it’s like going all the way around the playground, and that's just one little corner of space!

So when we talk about distances in space, we're really talking about how far apart things are, just like you know how far your favorite toy is from your bed!

Examples

  1. Using a ruler and your eyes, you can tell how far away a toy car is by seeing how much it moves as you walk past it.
  2. If you know the size of a tree and how big it looks from a distance, you can guess how far away you are.
  3. Imagine measuring the length of a room using two different points, that’s like parallax.
