How Does Conditionals in English | Zero, First, Second & Third Explained! Work?

Conditionals are like if-then stories that help us talk about what might happen in different situations.

Imagine you have a toy box. If you put your favorite toy inside it, then you can play with it later. That’s like a conditional, if one thing happens, then another thing follows.

How the Different Conditionals Work

Zero Conditional

This is like a rule that always works.

If you heat water to 100°C, it boils. Every time! No exceptions, just like how your toy box always keeps your toys safe if you put them in.

First Conditional

This is for things that might happen.

If you study hard tonight, you will pass the test tomorrow. It's like saying, “If I eat my vegetables, I can have dessert.”

Second Conditional

This is about what could happen if something were different.

If I had a flying bike, I would fly to school every day. It’s like imagining you had a superpower, even though you don’t right now.

Third Conditional

This is for things that didn’t happen and how they might have changed things.

If I had studied harder last night, I would have passed the test today. It's like looking back and thinking, “Oh, if only I had done that!”
