Sound is like a message that travels through air and reaches our ears, telling us what we hear, and pitch, loudness, and quality are the special features of that message.
What is Pitch?
What is Loudness?
Loudness is how strong or weak a sound feels. Imagine shouting in a big room versus whispering next to your ear. The shout is loud, and the whisper is soft. That’s because loudness depends on how much energy the sound has, like throwing a big ball vs. tossing a small pebble.
What is Quality?
Quality is what makes each sound unique. Two people can sing the same note, but you’ll still know it's them, that’s their special quality. It's like how your favorite blanket feels different from any other: it has its own texture and character. That’s how we tell a flute from a drum or your brother’s laugh from yours.
Examples
- A dog whistle has a high pitch that only dogs can hear.
- Two musical notes played on different instruments have distinct qualities.
