Black people have been living in America for thousands of years, long before Columbus arrived on a boat from Europe.
Imagine your favorite toy is hidden under a big pile of blankets. You don’t know it’s there, but it's been waiting for you all along! That’s what happened with Black people in America. They were already there, just like the toy under the blankets.
How did they get there?
Long ago, people traveled across the ocean on boats made of wood, just like how some kids today go to summer camp by boat. These early travelers came from places that are now called Africa, and they brought their families with them. Over time, their descendants lived in what is now America.
Why didn’t Columbus know about them?
Columbus thought he was the first person to find America, but he wasn't! It's like if you went to a park and thought no one else had ever been there before, when really your best friend had been playing there all day. Black people were already in America, living happy lives with their families, long before Columbus showed up.
