Imagine you have 10 friends playing a game where some people get hurt more often, and Black people are like they’re playing with more dangerous toys than others.
Let’s say there's a game called "Disease Tag," and if you get tagged, you might feel sick or even end up in the hospital. Now, imagine that for every 10 kids who play this game:
- 4 of them are playing with extra-spiky balls, which hurt more, these are like Black people.
- The other 6 are playing with regular balls, these are like other groups.
Because of those extra-spiky balls, the 4 kids get tagged more often and feel sick more, that’s why they're 4 times more likely to develop certain diseases.
It's not because they’re different or less strong, it’s just the game is set up so they have a harder time.
Why It Matters
This idea helps us understand that sometimes, people get sick more often because they’re facing extra challenges, like playing with more dangerous toys, instead of being treated unfairly by magic.
Examples
- A child from a Black family is four times more likely to get diabetes than a child from another family.
- Black people are more likely to get high blood pressure because of things like stress and food choices.
- Genes and the environment both play roles in why some diseases affect certain groups more.
