How Does Black Holes 101 | National Geographic Work?

A black hole is like a super strong vacuum cleaner that lives in space and can suck up anything, even light!

What Makes a Black Hole So Strong?

Imagine you have a trampoline, and it's really stretchy. If you jump on it, it bends. Now imagine if you put a black hole on the trampoline, it would bend it so much that nothing could escape once it went in. That’s kind of how black holes work: they’re super heavy, and their gravity is so strong that even light can’t get out.

What Happens When Something Gets Sucked In?

Think about dropping a marble into a deep, dark well, the marble just disappears. A black hole is like that well, but way bigger. If something gets too close, it gets pulled in and stretched really thin, kind of like spaghetti, we call this spaghettification!

Once inside, nothing comes back out, not even your favorite toy or a spaceship. It’s like the end of the line for anything that goes near a black hole.
