How does bird flu affect backyard chickens and cats?

Bird flu is a virus that can make chickens and even cats feel very sick, just like when you catch a cold.

Imagine your chickens are playing in the yard, they’re happy and healthy. But then one of them starts coughing and sneezing, and soon all the others are doing the same. That's bird flu spreading! It’s like when someone in class gets a cold, and before long, everyone is sniffly and sneezy.

How Bird Flu Spreads

Bird flu can spread from chickens to cats if they get close, maybe by eating food that has virus germs on it. Cats are curious creatures; sometimes they’ll try to catch a chicken or just eat something they find in the yard. That’s how the virus can jump from one animal to another.

What Happens When They’re Sick

When chickens have bird flu, they might stop laying eggs and feel tired, like when you're too sick to play outside. Cats with bird flu may also feel weak, have a fever, or even get very sleepy. It’s not fun being sick, but most animals can recover if they rest and get some good food.

So remember: just like you can catch germs from your friend, chickens and cats can catch viruses too, and sometimes the viruses make them feel really unwell!
