Beekeeper Erika Thompson explains how bee colonies work like a big, busy school where every student has a special job.
Like a Team of Friends
In a bee colony, there are three types of bees: the queen, the workers, and the drones. The queen is like the principal, she lays eggs and tells the other bees what to do. The workers are like the students who clean up, feed the babies, and collect food. They also turn honey into a snack for winter! The drones are like the cool kids in class, their job is to find a new home for the colony when needed.
A Dance of Communication
When worker bees find a good spot for food, they do a special dance called the "waggle dance." It’s like when your friend points and says, “Look! Ice cream!”, it tells the other bees exactly where to go.
Erika helps bees by giving them homes called hives, just like you have a classroom to learn in. She watches how they work together, and that helps her understand their whole world better.
Examples
- A hive is like a city where worker bees collect food, and the queen lays eggs.
- Bees use dance to tell each other where flowers are.
- Beekeepers help manage hives so bees can thrive.
