How Does Ancient Egyptian Burial Work?

Ancient Egyptian burial was like giving someone the best possible gift to help them live forever in a happy place.

The Big Sleep

When an ancient Egyptian person died, they were buried in a tomb, which was like a fancy bed for their body. Sometimes these tombs were inside big rocks or even in pyramids! Before being put into the tomb, the body would be cleaned and wrapped up tightly with bandages, just like how you might wrap up a present.

The Treasure Box

Inside the tomb, there was often lots of stuff that the person liked. These were called goods, and they included food, jewelry, tools, and even toys! It was as if the person was taking all their favorite things with them to enjoy in the afterlife, kind of like packing for a long vacation.

The Magic Words

Sometimes, people wrote special messages on the walls of the tomb. These were called inscriptions, and they told stories about how amazing the person was, almost like a really long birthday card from the gods!
