How does absence affect presence?

Imagine you have a favorite toy that lives in your backpack, when it’s there, you know it's present, and you can play with it whenever you want.

Now, think about what happens when you take it out of the backpack. It’s still there, but now it's not just part of the backpack anymore, it's absent from that spot. But being absent doesn’t mean it disappears! It just means it's somewhere else, like in your hands or on the floor.

When absence makes presence feel bigger

If you hide your toy under a pillow and then find it again, its presence feels more exciting because it was absent for a while. You didn’t know where it was, that made finding it even better!

Absence can also mean something is still there

Sometimes, things are absent but you can still feel them or hear them. Like when your mom leaves the room, she’s not in the room anymore, but you can still hear her voice from another part of the house.

So absence doesn’t always make presence go away, it just changes how we experience both! Imagine you have a favorite toy that lives in your backpack, when it’s there, you know it's present, and you can play with it whenever you want.
