A volcano erupts when pressure inside the Earth becomes too much. Imagine you're filling a bottle with soda and shaking it up, it makes bubbles and fizz. Inside a volcano, hot rock (called magma) moves upward like bubbles in a fizzy drink. When the lid of the bottle pops off, it's like an eruption! The magma comes out as lava, smoke, and ash, making a big mess on top.
