A plankton bloom is like a big party in the ocean that changes life for many sea creatures.
Imagine you're playing on a playground, and suddenly there are lots more toys, it's easier to have fun, and more kids want to join. That’s what happens when plankton, tiny floating plants and animals, multiply quickly in the ocean. This is called a plankton bloom.
How It Feels for Ocean Animals
When plankton numbers go up, it’s like getting extra snacks at lunchtime. Fish, whales, and even birds come to enjoy the feast. They eat the plankton or the animals that eat the plankton, it's a whole food chain party!
But sometimes too many plankton can make the ocean water look green or yellow, like when you spill juice on your shirt. This can make it harder for some sea creatures to see, and might even make them sick.
So, a plankton bloom is like an extra snack time in the ocean, it helps some animals, but can also cause problems if it gets too big!
Examples
