How Does a Medieval Castle Actually Work?

A medieval castle is like a giant, fancy fortress that helps people stay safe and in control.

Imagine your house is part of a big toy block tower, that’s kind of what a castle is like! It has walls, which are like really thick, tall fences made of stone. These walls keep out enemies, like the kids who come to play but want to take your toys.

Inside the castle, there's a keep, think of it as the biggest and strongest room in the tower. That’s where the king or queen lives, and they can stay safe even if the rest of the castle gets attacked.

There are also towers, like tall blocks on the sides of your tower. Knights stand up there to watch for enemies and maybe throw things down at them, kind of like when you throw a ball from the top of the stairs to bother your brother.

Sometimes, there's a moat around the castle, that’s like a big puddle or pond with water, and sometimes it has drawbridges, which are like pretend bridges made of wood that can go up and down. Enemies have to cross them to get in!

That’s how a medieval castle works, like a giant, strong toy fortress!
