What Is a Magnetic Field?

Imagine you have two magnets, one on your fridge, one in your hand. When you bring them close, they snap together. That's the same idea as a magnetic field, it’s like an invisible force that pushes and pulls things around Earth.

Earth has its own magnet inside it, kind of like a big bar magnet deep down. This makes a magnetic field all around us.

How a Compass Feels It

A compass has a little magnet in it, the needle. When you take the compass to space, far away from Earth’s magnetic field, the needle doesn’t feel that hidden push anymore and can spin freely, like a fidget spinner with no one holding it.

But if someone brings the compass close to Earth again, the magnetic field pushes on the needle, whoosh!, and it points north, just like magic, but really it’s just a friendly invisible hand guiding it.
