How It Works When you hear a clock *tick*, it’s counting [one second](/search?q=one%20second). Some clocks use something called a [quartz crystal](/search?q=quartz%20crystal) that vibrates really fast, like a tiny super-fast drummer inside the clock. Every [vibration](/search?q=vibration) is counted as a tick, and that’s how clocks know exactly what time it is.
Examples
- A pendulum swings once every second, just like a heartbeat counting time.
- Even your phone knows the exact time because of super-accurate clocks in its system.
