How Does 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise: Coping with Panic, Anxiety & Emotions Work?

The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise is a fun way to calm your mind when you feel super worried or scared, like when you're stuck in a tight spot and need a little help to relax.

Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy, but suddenly it falls apart. You feel sad, maybe even a little panicky. That’s when the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise can help you feel better again, like a superpower that brings you back to the present moment!

Grounding is like taking a deep breath and saying, “I’m here right now.” It helps you stop feeling lost in your worries.

How it works

You start by naming 5 things you can see, like 5 colorful blocks on the floor. Then you think of 4 things you can feel, maybe the softness of your blanket or the roughness of a toy. Next, name 3 things you can hear, such as your favorite song playing. After that, find 2 things you can smell, like cookies baking in the kitchen. Finally, think of 1 thing you can taste, like a sweet lollipop.

By doing this, your brain gets distracted from what’s making you feel scared, and it starts to feel safe again, just like when you're snuggled up with your favorite blanket!
