The Earth is full of weird rocks and strange shapes that look like they were made by a very creative kid.
Imagine you have a big pile of clay. If you squish it, cook it, freeze it, or even let water flow through it for a really long time, you can make all sorts of cool shapes. That’s kind of what happens deep inside the Earth, only instead of clay, it's rocks and soil, and instead of your hands, there are heat, pressure, and water doing the work.
Like Building with Playdough
Some rocks look like they were stretched out really thin, like when you pull playdough into long strings. Others are folded, like a piece of paper that got crumpled up and then flattened again. Some even look like giant frozen waves, made by water moving back and forth for thousands of years.
The Earth’s Superpowers
Deep under the ground, rocks can be heated up to almost 1000 degrees, hot enough to melt them! When they cool down slowly, they form big, smooth shapes. If they cool fast, they might look like rough, jagged pieces of broken glass.
The Earth is like a giant rock artist, using heat, pressure, and water as its tools, and it's been painting for billions of years!
