How do we express logic?

We use symbols and rules to express logic, just like we use words and grammar to tell stories.

Imagine you have a toy box full of blocks, some red, some blue. You might say, "If I pick a red block, then I get a snack." This is a simple kind of logic, where one thing happens because of another. We can write that as:

Red Block → Snack

Now imagine you have two rules:

  1. If it's sunny, we play outside.
  2. If it's rainy, we read books.

We can use symbols like S for "sunny" and R for "rainy," and write these as:

S → Play

R → Read

This is just like how you might use a map, the symbols are your landmarks, and the rules help you know where to go next. You don’t need magic; you just need symbols and rules, and then you can build whole worlds of thinking!

Examples

  1. Using 'and', 'or', and 'not' to combine ideas, like saying 'I want pizza and ice cream.'
  2. Telling a story where choices matter, like deciding whether to go left or right.
  3. Drawing simple shapes on paper to show relationships between things.
