How Do Submarines Work?

A submarine is like a special boat that can swim under the water and come back up to the surface.

Imagine you have a toy boat in a bathtub. If you put it in the water, it floats. But if you fill it with water, maybe by putting marbles inside, it sinks. That’s kind of how submarines work!

How Submarines Float

Submarines use something called ballast tanks. These are like big empty containers that can be filled with water or air.

When the submarine wants to float up, it lets in air into the ballast tanks. The air pushes out the water, making the submarine lighter, just like your toy boat when you take marbles out of it!

How Submarines Dive

When the submarine wants to go down, it lets in water into the ballast tanks. This makes the submarine heavier, and it sinks, just like your toy boat when you add more marbles.

It’s like having a special kind of magic that lets the submarine swim up and down like a fish! 🐠
