Think of the Earth as a giant, invisible magnet hidden deep inside the planet.
A compass is just a tiny piece of metal called a magnet. You might have played with fridge magnets before. One end is marked North and the other South. Opposite ends of magnets always pull toward each other, while matching ends push away. This pulling force is called magnetism.
The Hidden Pull
The Earth has its own magnetic field, which is like an invisible blanket of force wrapping around the world. Inside the Earth’s core, moving iron creates this field. The North Pole of the compass needle is actually a south magnetic pole. Because opposites attract, it gets pulled toward the Earth’s magnetic north, which acts like a giant south pole.
Imagine holding two fridge magnets. If you hold them close, they snap together. The compass needle does the same thing, but instead of snapping to another magnet, it snaps to the Earth itself.
The needle doesn't "know" where north is. It just follows the strongest pull it feels.
