How do deepfake videos trick us into believing they are real?

Deepfake videos make it look like someone is saying or doing something they never actually said or did, just like a clever puppet show where the puppeteer makes the puppet believe it's dancing on its own.

Imagine your favorite cartoon character. You know how they move their mouth to talk, right? Well, deepfakes are kind of like that, but with real people!

How It Works

Deepfake videos use computer tricks to copy a person’s face and movements onto another person’s body in a video.

  • First, the computer learns how someone's face moves when they speak. It studies lots of pictures or videos.
  • Then, it puts that face on someone else, like putting your favorite cartoon character's mouth on a real person's face!
  • The result is so smooth and realistic that it looks like the new person is actually talking, even though they didn’t say those words at all.

It’s like watching a friend speak in front of you, but you know for sure they’re not saying what you think they are. That's how deepfakes trick us!
