How Do Chameleons Change Colors?

Chameleons change colors using special cells in their skin called chromatophores, like how a chameleon can look like it's wearing different outfits.

How It Works

Imagine your skin has little colored balls inside it. When the chameleon wants to change color, those balls move around or change size, just like when you squish a balloon and make it bigger or smaller. Some of these balls are melanophores, which have dark colors like black and brown. Others are iridophores, which can reflect different colors like a shiny mirror.

Why They Change Colors

Chameleons change colors for many reasons, to blend in with their surroundings, to show they're happy or angry, or even to talk to other chameleons! It's like when you wear your favorite shirt to school because you feel good, or you put on a hat to hide behind.

Sometimes, the color change happens really fast, almost like magic, but it’s just the little colored balls working together in a super cool way.
