How Do Bees Communicate the Location of Flowers?

Bees use a special dance to tell each other where the best flowers are hiding.

When a bee finds a flower full of nectar or pollen, it goes back to the hive and starts dancing. This is like when you come home from school and can’t wait to tell your friend about the best ice cream shop you found, except the bee uses a dance!

The "Waggle Dance"

If the flower is far away, the bee does something called the waggle dance. It moves in a figure-eight pattern, waggling its body back and forth like it’s doing a little hip shake. The direction of the dance tells the other bees which way to go, and how fast it waggles shows how far the flower is, just like when you tell your friend how far the ice cream shop is by saying "it's two blocks away!"

The "Round Dance"

If the flower is nearby, the bee does a simpler round dance, moving in small circles. It’s like telling your friend, "the ice cream shop is right around the corner!", no need for complicated steps.

Other bees watch the dance and then fly off to find the flowers themselves! 🐝✨
