The Phoenicians helped create the letters we use today, like the ones on your phone or book.
Like a Super Simple Alphabet Game
Imagine you and your friend are playing with blocks, each block has just one letter on it: A, B, C... all the way up to Z. The Phoenicians were like the first players of this game. They made 22 letters, which was much simpler than what people used before. These letters were easy to write and remember, like how you might learn your ABCs in school.
How Their Letters Spread
The Phoenicians traveled by sea, trading with lots of different people. When they went to new places, they taught others their letters, just like when you teach a friend a new song. Over time, other groups added more letters and made them look different, kind of like how your drawing of a cat might look different from mine, but we both know it’s a cat.
Today, many writing systems, like the one you use to read this, are based on those simple letters the Phoenicians started. That's why they're so important!
