How Did the Ancient Greeks Decide Who Was the Best Olympian?

The Ancient Greeks picked the best Olympian by having people cheer and vote for them like they were picking their favorite toy in a playground.

How the Voting Worked

At the end of each competition, everyone watched the athletes run, jump, or wrestle. When one person did something amazing, like running faster than anyone else, people started to clap and shout, just like you do when your favorite team scores a goal.

Then, judges, kind of like teachers who know what's fair, gave the winner a special prize called a wreath, made from olive leaves. It was like getting a gold star in school, but way more exciting!

What Made Someone the Best

Sometimes, even if someone wasn’t the fastest or strongest, they could still win if they did something really cool, like falling down and then getting up to keep fighting. The Greeks loved that kind of bravery, just like you love when your friend keeps trying after a game.

So, it was a mix of speed, strength, and courage, all decided by claps, shouts, and a little bit of fun!
