People used things they could touch and move to help them count before numbers existed.
Imagine you have a bag of pebbles, small, round stones that are easy to pick up and put down. If you want to know how many apples you have in your basket, you can take one pebble for each apple. When you're done, the number of pebbles in your hand shows how many apples you had.
Using Body Parts
Sometimes people used their own bodies to count! Like using their fingers, you can count up to 10 on one hand. If you need more, you can use both hands or even your toes!
Making Marks
Another fun way was to make marks on a wall or a piece of wood. Every time something happened, like catching a fish, they would draw a line or a dot. After a while, they could see how many things had happened by counting the marks.
It’s like when you count how many times you jump rope, every time you finish a round, you make a mark on the floor!
Examples
- Using stones to count how many animals were in a herd
- Making tally marks on bones to remember days passed
- Knotting a rope for each item collected during hunting
