Life started when tiny building blocks in the ocean joined together to make the very first living thing.

Imagine your kitchen sink is a big, warm pool of water. Long, long ago, our planet was covered in huge oceans. In this water, small atoms (the tiniest pieces of matter) began to link up, like linking paperclips or snapping LEGO bricks together. These links made long chains called molecules.
